What is Ozone Therapy?
Ozone (O₃) is an active form of oxygen composed of three oxygen atoms. In medical applications, ozone therapy aims to utilize the oxidative properties of this molecule to support the immune system, increase tissue oxygenation, and regulate metabolism.
Ozone therapy is considered a complementary method. In other words, it is not a primary treatment for diseases but may be used to support conventional medical treatments.
Ozone Therapy Methods at Heraderma
At Heraderma Clinic, the following two main methods will be applied:
1. Serum Ozone Therapy (Ozonated Serum Infusions)
Application principle:
A sterile serum (e.g., 0.9% physiological saline solution) is saturated with ozone in a special ozone-compatible glass container. This ozonated serum is then infused intravenously into the patient.
Protocol & technical details:
The ozonation process usually takes about 15–20 minutes.
Using the “three-needle method”: one needle for ozone gas entry, one for ozone exhaust, and the middle one for infusion.
Ozonated serum should be administered shortly after preparation since ozone has a limited half-life.
Expected effects and benefits:
Increased cellular oxygenation
Improved energy levels
Stimulation of the immune system
Activation of antioxidant systems
Supportive role in conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, immune weakness, and general detox support
Precautions / limitations:
The procedure must always be performed under medical supervision
The ozone dose should be adjusted based on the patient’s general condition and chronic illnesses
Preparation must be done under sterile conditions
2. Blood Ozone Therapy (Autohemotherapy / Ozone Blood Washing)
This method is sometimes referred to as “major autohemotherapy” or “ozone blood washing.”
Application principle:
A certain amount of blood (e.g., 50–200 ml) is drawn from the patient
The blood is mixed with an ozone/oxygen mixture at the appropriate dose and concentration
The ozonated blood is then reinfused into the patient’s circulation
Benefits and effects:
Improved oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood
Support for microcirculation
Immune system regulation
Anti-inflammatory and detoxification effects
Supportive use in certain chronic diseases
Risks and precautions:
Must be performed under sterile conditions by an experienced physician
Overdosing may cause side effects (e.g., temporary headache, low blood pressure, local reactions)
In specific conditions (such as glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency with methemoglobin risk), extra caution is required
The treatment process should be individualized based on the patient’s general condition and existing chronic illnesses
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can ozone therapy be applied to everyone?
No. It may not be suitable for everyone. Certain hematological disorders, severe lung diseases, active bleeding, and pregnancy are among the contraindications.
How many sessions are required?
The number of sessions depends on the patient’s condition, targeted outcome, and treatment plan. Typically, 8–10 sessions may be applied as a course.
Are there any side effects?
Generally, mild and temporary side effects may occur, such as dizziness, slight fatigue, or sensitivity at the injection site. Serious complications are rare.
When can improvement be noticed?
Some patients report increased energy and a sense of well-being after a few sessions. However, the full benefit is usually observed after completing the course.
